For the first time since moving to HVS in 1999, I got to take a week's
vacation. My friends, Valerie, Meg and I trailered our horses (Delight,
Sully and Hercules) to Denny Emerson's
Tamarack Hill Farm in
Strafford, VT, where we spent a week in his lovely, secluded cabin in
the mountains. We had a small stable with two stalls, a paddock and a
run-in shed just a short distance from the cabin, and with a gorgeous
view of the Vermont mountains, it was our own little paradise.
During the week, we took two lessons with Denny, the first focusing
on stadium jumping, and the second working on his cross country
course. We thoroughly enjoyed the lessons, as well as watching him
teach other students who rode before us. He prepared us well for the
schooling horse trials at the
Vershire Riding School, where Meg and
Valerie competed in the Novice Division, and Delight and I competed
Beginner Novice. All of us went clear on both XC and Stadium, and we
brought home ribbons as mementos of our fantastic week.

If you don`t personally ride in a risk sport, you
cannot personally know that the euphoria
eventers get is the result of being scared all day
before x-c, then rising up to cope with that fear,
vanquishing it, at least to some extent, and then
savoring the feeling that they`ve accomplished
something hard.

And they share that risk, which is what makes
this so special.
